I have been reloading for 2 years now, and resisted all the temptations to get a Chronograph, but i saw a fantastic deal last week, and finally had to get a one. $75 shipped for a Shooting Chrono F1 Master.... Besides the obvious "Dont shoot it", any one got any advice on how to properly use/set up a Chronograph?

That's been on my list to get for about a year now. Even if you don't reload, I think it'd be good for verifying velocities of even factory ammo.

Actually, Pat (dhskibum) may know, but he's on his way out to California for a few days. He reloads.

Don't shoot it. ;D Most of the time just shoot through the "Y" into a safe backdrop. Normally it will give some general destructions. I would stay a few yards behind it just so it doesn't get powder burns but other than that they are pretty straight forward. I've only used them for archery.

so, i finally got to use my chronograph, and guess what, i freaking shot it.... but not the brains part, the metal guide rods on the sides that hold the sun cover things... i was on my 20th or so shot, of some type of 45ACP, i was shooting, just getting speed readings, shooting at a berm safely so didnt pay any attention to the wind, big guest comes, and it spun the chronograph just enough right before i was shooting i knicked one of the metal rods and it went flying, found it 15ft away definitly slightly bent.... Damn i was pissed, i was able to ghetto rig it and was able to keep using the shades and got most of my readings. I have never used one before, took awhile to find the right spot to place it distance from me wise, but after 10 or so Error cant read shots to begin with, i moved it to about 10ft away and it was pretty good then. I did get a bunch of erratic readings from time to time, like i was getting 1075fps average for 10 shots of 9mm i was shooting, and then i had 3 or 4 1700fps ones randomly (and no, it wasnt actually going that fast). I just threw those readings out and moved on with my day. I moved it out to 15ft and tried my 308 AAC Rem700, and each of the 2 recipes i use were spot on what I was hoping they would be, so overall, after about an hour of learning how to use it, its a handy tool for a reloader and i now know my speeds and most of them were what i was expecting. I found out my only hot load was some Hornady XTP 230g 45's i loaded that were max, they were going around 875fps, i was only hoping for 850, but i only have 75 or so of them left.

OK ,so now you,ve shot it. Did,t you read the instructions on how far to place it from the muzzle ? I place mine on a camera tripod,IIRC about 15 ft ahead of the muzzle.Weather conditions,sun/shade play hell with my readings.I started with a BB gun and a 22 before moving up to center fires.

i only shot a support stem for the shade cause of some damn wind, i still need to order those parts cause i need to chrono some new IDPA loads to make sure i can make PF with them, i was plenty far away. Its definitly scary shooting so close to something like that, which is why for my first one, i didnt spend much at all to get it, figured I can learn on it.
